Sports Stadia & Venues

COWI's extensive knowledge of cable structures and bridges led us naturally into the field of long span structures for the sporting world.

These structures are often difficult to build and require a detailed understanding of structural behaviour, not just in the completed stage but throughout the construction process.

Working for numerous sports clients, we have recently provided the erection engineering service for the new roof on the London Olympic Stadium - the largest cable supported roof in the world; and are actively involved in the design of moving structures, including retractable roofs and turf pitches.

Experience in this sector

Our engineers' experience of sports projects covers football, cricket, rugby, athletics, swimming, horseracing, ice hockey, tennis, rowing, and even camel racing! We have worked on projects in this sector around the world, including North America, Europe, Asia, and Africa.

Our knowledge of the behaviour of long span structures has led to commissions for Terminal 5 Heathrow and the Millennium Dome in Greenwich. We have also recently provided erection engineering services for the iconic Oculus transit hub in New York, in conjunction with COWI North America.

Innovation and cost efficiency

We maintain strong links with contractors and specialist suppliers to enable bid teams to consider innovative and cost effective means of designing and building complex structures.

We are equally at ease working as a client’s advisor or a contractor’s designer. We can provide structural advice at all levels from Peer review through to conceptual and detailed design, erection engineering, and Independent Checking.

We also provide Expert Witness services to this sector.
