COWI UK Limited has a proven track record in the field of rock/soil slope assessment, stabilisation and design.

We have delivered solutions in many challenging environments including rail, roads, coastal protection, quarries, wind farms and development sites, both in the UK and overseas. COWI UK Limited has an established reputation for providing robust, practical and pragmatic slope remediation and enhancement solutions, either as part of a planned phase of works, or emergency on-site repair including design and construction direction/supervision.

Our involvement has ranged from advice on small scale individual housing projects, regular asset management inspections and reporting, to multi-million pound infrastructure schemes.

Our experience enables us to provide a considered assessment, identify the risks and provide a safe and cost-effective solution, whether it is for remediation, existing slopes or construction of new ones.

Rock slopes

Rock slope management by its nature is often both intrusive and large scale. By identifying and mitigating environmental aspects at the early stages of the design process the best outcomes can be developed. Our engineers are experienced in ensuring that work methods reduce environmental impacts.

All designs are sensitive to the production of waste with on-site waste disposal/re-use recommended wherever possible.  We are familiar with environmental legislation and liaising with national Environment Agencies.

Soil slopes

Innovative solutions have included an alternative soil nailing design for a large slope in Aeolian Sand, resulting in a saving of up to 40% in materials quantities and 30% in nail lengths.

Similarly, the use of high strength state of practice facing material and a refined design model allowed the cost-effective enhancement of a 20m deep 5km long cutting in Mercia Mudstone.  Traditional solutions had proven impractical and excessively time-consuming to build having utilised the full budget to remediate one short section.
