Bridge dynamics are essential for the safety and operation of major bridge designs. COWI adds value to bridge design and construction processes through specialist knowledge gained from a large number of world-class bridge projects.

Aerodynamic stability

Our aerodynamic tests include aeroelastic analysis, computer simulation of wind effects, and the mitigation of wind-induced response. In addition, we have extensive experience in designing wind tunnel experiments and field tests, and we often collaborate with internationally respected tunnel laboratories. Our wind engineering services are based on CFD modelling and assess wind climate at site for human comfort and micro-meteorology.

Structural health monitoring systems (SHMS)

Monitoring bridge structures for structural health is vital for ensuring its integrity and serviceability over time. Complex structures require tailor-made solutions. COWI has vast experience in the design of advanced SHMS for both new and existing structures, as well as planning, installation, testing and troubleshooting. Our engineers are specialists in emerging sensor technologies like fibre optic sensor (FOS), structural dynamics, and SHM-based maintenance programming for a longer service life.

Railway dynamics

High-speed trains are required to undergo highly technical and specialised testing procedures for train runnability, safety and passenger comfort. We use state-of-the-art modelling techniques on IBDAS, a programme developed in-house by COWI UK LTD. With IBDAS, our engineers can accurately perform precise calculations on rail:train:bridge interactions under different loads to assess whether they meet the most up-to-date Eurocode regulations. Where application, COWI UK LTD can adapt to local codes and regulations.
